India’s Foreign Minister Writes to Trini Elderlies
The Foreign (External Affairs) Minister of India, Shrimati Sushma Swaraj, wrote a memo extolling the virtues of people of Indian descent and for maintaining their links with Mother India, their ancestral homeland. The occasion was the honoring of elderly Indo Trinidadians at a special banquet and awards ceremony held in late September at the Hilton Trinidad. The event was organized by High Commissioner Bishwadip Dey and his staff at the High Commission. Minister Sushma has been reaching out to the diaspora. High Commissioner Dey has been taking a cue from her and the PM (Narendra Modi) reaching out to the diaspora. High Commissioner Dey has been hosting in Trinidad a variety of programs relating to festivals and national days in India.
The letter appears below. Minister Swaraj-ji wrote:
I am happy to send this letter, filled with emotion and affection on behalf of the people and Government of India. I am sure my letter meets you in good cheer, warmth and well-being.
As Minister for External Affairs, it is my bounden duty to acknowledge your sacrifices and struggles as you held the mantle of your family, guided your children, grand-children and their progenies. I am indebted to you for maintaining the cultural and familial values you imbibed from your parents, who left India during late 19th century. The upbringing of your children and their children testifies your strong emotional character, for which we are proud of.
I pray for your long life, continued prosperity and good health.
Please accept our good wishes and greetings, coming from the land of your parents.
